ATLANTA — A cardboard cutout or impersonator is as close as you’ll get to Queen Elizabeth II in metro Atlanta, but you’ll find great affection for her here.

“There are not many monarchies across the world left,” said Sarah Gilbert, a native of Britain. “How many 85-year-olds do you know who work full time?”

The British American Business Group and volunteers from Atlanta’s British and Commonwealth communities organized an Atlanta celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on Saturday.

Volunteers from Atlanta’s British and Commonwealth communities organized a local celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee at Oglethorpe University on Saturday.

“The queen herself has provided 60 years of public service and has been an incredible source of constancy through a time of all sorts of change in our nation and around the globe,” said Annabelle Malins, who has served as the British Consul General in Atlanta since 2009.

The celebration drew hundreds of ex-pats and fans of British culture. It took place on the campus of Oglethorpe University, which is named for Sir General James Oglethorpe.

“He came over and founded Georgia,” Gilbert said.

“That was before you all threw us out,” she added with a laugh.

It’s a big year for Great Britain. After the Jubilee comes the London Summer Olympics in July.

“We’re welcoming the world’s spotlight this year,” Malins said. “The year 2012 is great for us. We hope people will take a fresh look at our nation and enjoy the multi-cultural, creative, dynamic population we have.”
